The Election Commission said the results would be out on March 10 along with other states.
In 2017, elections to the Punjab Legislative Assembly were held in a single phase on 4 February to elect 117 members. The Congress led by Captain Amarinder Singh won 77 seats from the alliance of Shiromani Akali Dal and K. BJP 18 and Aam Aadmi Party won 20.
But things have gotten a lot more complicated in the last five years. First, the Shiromani Akali Dal broke its two-decade-old alliance with the BJP over controversial agriculture bills, which were opposed by a large number of farmers in the state. After this it went ahead and formed an alliance with Mayawati’s BSP.
Then, when sailing seemed right for the Congress, the fight between Captain Singh and state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu took an ugly turn, Singh was forced to step down as CM, and he quit the party. Gave.
The Congress then appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as Chief Minister keeping in view the Dalit Singh votes, Amarinder Singh formed his own Punjab Lok Congress and formed an alliance with the BJP.
So far these parties are in the fray: Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal-BSP alliance and BJP-Punjab Lok Congress-SAD (United) alliance.
