Dol Jatra / Dol Yatra / Dol Purnima (Doljatra / Dol Yatra / Dol Purnima) is a major festival celebrated in West Bengal and Odisha. Lord Krishna is worshiped in this festival.

This festival is celebrated along with Holi festival. On this day people worship the picture or idol of Shri Krishna ji and celebrate this day in a big way. On this day the idol of Shri Krishna ji is decorated with colors which is called ‘Abir’ in Bengali language.

The idol of Lord Shri Krishna ji is beautifully decorated. After decorating, the idol of Lord Kaji is placed in a beautiful swing and decorated with flowers, clothes, leaves and colored papers and a procession is taken out which we know as Dol Jatra / Dol Yatra. .

In this procession people dance, paint each other, move forward with lots of music and the sacred sound of conch shell. The colored powder is called Phaag in Bengali and Phagu in Odia.

Dol Purnima is an even more important day for Bengali people as this day is also the birthday of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He was a great Vaishnava saint who pioneered and popularized modern sankirtana. He carried forward the passion of Radha Krishna spiritually.

On this day, all people apply color to the feet of their elders and take blessings from them. In most of the states in India, this day is celebrated in the name of Choti Holi and they play Gulal.

Usually Dol Purnima or Dol Jatra is celebrated for one to two days. But in Mathura and Vrindavan, Dol Yatra is celebrated for 16 consecutive days.
