Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Wednesday that there will be no relaxation in restrictions till at least mid-February as the number of Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the state. The state health department told the cabinet that the number of hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra is expected to increase in the last week of January or the first week of February. The health department made this estimate during a presentation before the state cabinet. Tope said that since smaller cities have registered a surge in cases, slowing down the spread of the virus by imposing restrictions and accelerating vaccination is a priority, as has been suggested by experts. Tope said that he has demanded 50 lakh doses of Covisheild and 40 lakh doses of Covaxin during a meeting with Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. “There has been a decline in cases in the last two days, but that does not mean that the effect of the wave is waning. Today there are 46,000 cases. so the wave is not low," Tope told reporters. The Health Minister said that strict steps will be taken to get people vaccinated. “It is not right that people take concessions like ration given by the state but do not come forward for vaccination. We may not be able to make immunization mandatory, but districts have been asked to take strict action in the interest of wider public health to ensure that everyone is vaccinated.” Tope said so. A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that the state has witnessed an increase in the daily requirement of medical oxygen and the current demand is 400 MT. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said during the meeting. ) said “If the demand for oxygen increases to 700 MT, strict restrictions will be required. Keeping this fact in mind the district administration should expedite the vaccination and take necessary steps." He said that along with the cities, the rural parts are also affected by Kovid-19.   There will be no relief from restrictions until next month.
