Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Gulzar Ahmad Khan on Friday remarked during a hearing on a case involving places of worship of minorities that they were in danger that hospitals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would soon become five-star hotels.

The chief justice added that “there are no facilities for ordinary citizens in hospitals.”

A bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the case regarding minority places of worship in which the chairman of the Derelict Waqf Property Board, Chief Secretary KP and other officials appeared before the court.

It may be recalled that National Assembly member Ramesh Kumar has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the occupation and demolition of religious places of worship by the Federal Investigation Agency.

It should be noted that the Abandoned Waqf Property Board is responsible for the maintenance of religious places of worship built on millions of acres of land across the country.

On the other hand, the FIA has vacated several buildings of such places of worship and commercial properties managed by the board and demolished them.

These places of worship include the Dharamshala, a Hindu shrine in Karachi, built in 1932.

Today, hearing petitioner Ramesh Kumar told the court that a commercial plaza is being constructed on the land of Dharamshala in Karachi.

Upon inquiry by the court, the chairman of the Abandoned Waqf Property Board said, “Dharamshala was ancient and the land is of abandoned waqf, so construction can be done on it under the law.”

He said that Dharamshala building is very old and it cannot be preserved in its original condition.

On this, the Chief Justice said, “Should all the old buildings be ordered to be demolished like this?”

“Mr. Chairman, you cannot escape your responsibilities. What action did the FIA take on the issue of Jain Temple and Blue Dome in Lahore?

The court directed the FIA to file a case and evidence against Dharamshala in Karachi and directed the federal agency not to harass the public.

He said: “The common man should not be afraid of the FIA that they will take him away.

In the name of FIA investigation, the net is spread as to how many fish will be caught. The whole country is suffering from instability because of these actions.

The Chief Justice said that such a big Kartarpur corridor was built. The rest of the country also has places of worship for minorities.

Petitioner Ramesh Kumar said at one point during the hearing that there were no facilities for minorities in government hospitals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Chief Justice then summoned the Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the rostrum and asked, “Chief Secretary, have you visited the government hospitals in KP?”

The chief secretary said, “I visited a hospital which had all the medical facilities.” To which Justice Gulzar Ahmad Khan said, “This statement does not suit you. There are facilities for you everywhere.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice further said that there are no facilities for ordinary citizens in the hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. I fear that soon KP hospitals will become five star hotels.

Later, the court directed the Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to submit a detailed report on all government hospitals in the province.
