The Court of Inquiry’s report has arrived in CDS General Bipin Rawat’s helicopter crash. It said an unexpected change in the weather had distracted the pilot and probably caused the plane to hit the surface. India’s first Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat died in this accident on 8 December 2021.

The Court of Inquiry belongs to the three armies. It is investigating the cause of the crash of that plane Mi-17 V5. The Court of Inquiry has examined the flight data recorder and cockpit vice recorder and preliminary investigation has found that there was neither any mechanical error nor negligence on the part of anyone.

“The Court of Inquiry has ruled out mechanical error, sabotage or negligence as the cause of the accident,” the Indian Air Force said on Friday. The accident was caused due to the aircraft entering the clouds due to unexpected change in weather conditions in the valley. The investigation report stated that the accident occurred as a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) as a result of the pilot’s momentary disorientation.

CFIT refers to when an aircraft in the air under the complete control of the pilot inadvertently collides with the ground, water or object. This has been considered the main reason for plane accidents around the world.

The Air Force has also said that the Court of Inquiry has made some important suggestions which are being reviewed.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VK Chaudhary, along with the head of the inquiry committee, Air Marshal Manvendra Singh, had briefed Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on the findings on January 5.

A Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying General Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 12 other armed forces personnel had crashed on December 8 last year in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. CDS General Rawat, his wife and 11 others died in the accident. Group Captain Varun Singh aboard the helicopter miraculously survived the accident but died a few days later due to severe burns.
