Congressman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is in trouble. On Thursday, the National Commission for Women issued a notice demanding an explanation for Adhir’s “first lady” comment. Recently, Draupadi Murmu became President of India. In a music video circulating on social media, Chowdhury refers to Murmu as “Rashtrapatni”. After that, the BJP started to raise their voices over Adhir’s comments.
The Congresswoman courted controversy by calling President Draupadi Murmu a “first lady” during protests against Sonia Gandhi’s summons to the National Herald case. Accusing the president of insulting him, BJP leaders demanded an immediate apology for his controversial remarks. However, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said “There is no question of apologizing”, effectively denying the opposition’s demands.
In an interview with a news agency, Adhir said there was no question of apologizing. I mistakenly said “first lady”. The BJP is deliberately trying to make a problem out of it. However, the BJP senior leadership is unwilling to agree to Adhir’s request. Yesterday, BJP MPs and ministers started protesting in the Lok Sabha against Adhir’s comments. The list included Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Smriti Irani and top BJP leaders.
Union Minister Smriti Irani said: “The Congress leader addressed President Draupadi Murmu as ‘wife’. This comment insults the dignity of the highest constitutional office. The country knows that Congress is anti-tribal, anti-dalit and anti-women. He should apologize immediately for that comment.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, meanwhile, said, “Ever since Draupadi Murmu was nominated as President, Congress has targeted her and attacks against her have continued even after her election as President. Led by Sonia Gandhi, Congress continues to denigrate women in constitutional office Congress should apologize in Parliament and publicly for insulting our country’s first indigenous president”. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha session was adjourned at noon due to this protest.
On Thursday, on its own initiative, the National Women’s Commission issued a notice. Congressman Adhir Chowdhury has been invited to appear before the panel on August 3. Adhir was also asked to provide a written explanation for his comments. A statement from the committee said: “The Congress leader addressed President Draupadi Murmu as ‘Rashtrapatni’. This comment is an insult to the dignity of the highest constitutional office and amounts to insulting the Honorable President”.
An FIR has already been filed against Adhir in Madhya Pradesh for his controversial remarks against President Draupadi Murmu. An FIR has been filed against Adhir in Dindari district of Madhya Pradesh, news agency ANI reported.
