IND vs SA: Cheteshwar Pujara backs Indian batters to tackle lateral movement in South Africa

Middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara said India’s current batting line-up is capable of handling the movement on pitches favorable to fast bowlers in South Africa and he has no doubt that the Virat Kohli-led side will do well here.

Pujara said the recent overseas victories have boosted India’s confidence and its impact will be visible in the three-Test series starting on Sunday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video on its Twitter handle in which Pujara said, “When you go on a foreign tour you know there will be momentum and bounce and the ball will move at the last minute. Out of India It’s always a big challenge to face fast bowlers.”

“This team has learned that and we have a more balanced batting line-up. I think we will be able to deal with it. Looking at our preparations, I am sure we will do well,” he said.

Pujara feels that the experience of playing in South Africa will also benefit the team. “Most of the (Indian) players have played in South Africa in the past. It is an experienced team and we know what is expected of us from the point of view of preparation,” he said.

“Most teams do well in their home conditions and South Africa is no exception. They have the best bowling attack and it has always been challenging to face one of the best fast bowlers,” Pujara said.

India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after beating Australia 2-1 in the four-match series earlier in the year. He then held a 2–1 lead against England in four matches on his soil. The fifth test of this series could not be done due to Kovid-19 infection.

Pujara said, “Doing well in England and Australia will make a big difference in the confidence of this team. It gives the team confidence that we can win overseas, we can win in any conditions and the way we bowl. And looking at the batting, I am very confident that we are capable of winning the series in South Africa.”

Pujara has not been able to perform consistently since 2020. He scored his last century in January 2019 in Australia. He scored two half-centuries in the last 10 innings but he knows how to bat in South African conditions.

“Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel were at their peak when I came here in 2011. I toured here in 2013 and 2017 and so know how to bat here,” he said.
