Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla is currently on a two-day visit to Myanmar. During the visit, he stressed that Myanmar should return to democracy as soon as possible and that those who have been detained or arrested should be released soon. Along with this, all issues should be resolved through discussion and violence should stop. The Foreign Secretary met the President of the State Administrative Council (SAC), members of political parties and civil society in Myanmar. He also met members of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party National League for Democracy. In this meeting, the Foreign Secretary also conveyed India’s concerns about security to the SAC President, especially in the context of the Churachandpur incident in Manipur, where an Indian Army colonel, his family and some soldiers were killed in an attack by banned groups.

The Foreign Secretary emphasized that violence in the border areas should stop and peace and stability should be restored. Both sides agreed that they will not allow their land to be used against each other. India has a border of about 1700 km with Myanmar and any situation there directly affects the border areas of India. In this context, peace and stability of Myanmar is important for the North East regions of India. This is India’s first official and high-level visit to Myanmar after the military took over in Myanmar.

Foreign Secretary Shringla assured Myanmar that India has strong and relentless support for ASEAN. There are now indications that Myanmar will no longer be barred from participating in ASEAN under Cambodia’s presidency. The Foreign Secretary handed over 1 million doses of the vaccine to the Myanmar Red Cross Society to deal with Kovid. An announcement was also made to give 10 thousand tonnes of rice.
