The Trinamool Supremo also emphasized on the development of the infrastructure of the minority dominated slums in various belts and elaborated about her plans to review KMC’s performance after six months to gauge the progress of the work and development.
Banerjee told the councillors from the Minority community to focus on development of slums in minority dominated areas. Development of toilets and sanitation systems is essential, she said. “If urban slums can be converted and alternative dwelling arrangements can be made for the dwellers with proper toilets and rooms,” Banerjee said.
“Planting of trees, drainage cleaning and maintenance of the roads are some of the focus areas,” she said, adding “I want Kolkata to be the best city in the country and that is the main aim of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.”
Putting forward the women’s empowerment issue, Mamata Banerjee nominated Mala Ray as the chairman of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and selected more than 50 % women Borough chairmen. Nine new women Borough chairmen in KMC were nominated by Banerjee, out of the total 16.
“We have a special focus on women’s empowerment. Out of 16 Borough Committee chairman, nine women have been nominated as Borough Chairman,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Towards building a better Kolkata, Banerjee said Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will review and bring out a report card on developments done every six months. She gave a clear message to the party workers, councillors and leaders that “no lobbying will be tolerated”.
Announcing the nominations, Banerjee named Atin Ghosh as the Deputy Mayor of KMC. There will be a 12-member Mayor in Council, including Debasish Kumar, Debabrata Majumdar and Tark Singh, among others.
In a clear message to the councillors, Banerjee said citizens should not be harassed. “Please remember, it is people’s money and the funds should be utilized with utmost care,” she said.
“Trianmool Congress workers has one leader and one symbol-that is our party logo. The councillors should be polite and humble when they go to people. You should work hard and prove yourself,” Mamata Banerjee said. She directed the councillors to start visiting the wards from tomorrow.
Firhad Hakim, the newly nominated Mayor, said, “We all will work to make the dream and vision of Mamata Banerjee a reality. It is our priority to keep promises made in the manifesto.”
In 2018, Hakim was appointed mayor following the resignation of Sovan Chatterjee, the former Mayor. Later, Hakim was appointed as Chairman of Board of Administrators of the KMC in May, 2020, after KMC Mayor’s five-year term was completed. He resigned as Chairman of Board of Administrators of KMC in March, 2021 after Election Commission of India (ECI) told all political appointees serving as board administrators of West Bengal municipal corporations, ahead of 2021 assembly polls, to stay away from such positions.
