Reliance Jio, one of India’s largest telecom service providers, has alerted its customers about e-KYC fraud. Telecom operator has cautioned its customers against the increasing incidents of cyber scams/frauds. Reliance Jio has also revealed the manner and manner in which fraudsters are duping innocent people. Apart from Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea also issued similar warnings to their customers about e-KYC fraud earlier this year. The company has warned its customers about 6 important things they should not do and why they are dangerous.
Reliance Jio is alerting its millions of users about the e-KYC scam. Jio has also shared some such tips, which users should keep in mind to stay safe from such scams.
What is e-KYC scam? What is E-KYC Scam in Hindi?
You must have seen that many times KYC message comes on your phone. Meaning whoever are scammers or thugs, they fool innocent people (who do not have knowledge) in the name of KYC verification.
Scammers usually ask users to share their KYC details/Aadhaar number or download the app or click on an unverified link. Through which, hackers try to get access to personal data of users like bank details, name, address, phone number.
For the last few months, a particular gang of fraudsters is active across the country. It has invented a new method of deception. By becoming bank officers, these thugs have cheated a large number of people. For this, they access the screen of people’s mobile phones through the app. These fraudulent calls ask people to verify their KYC. Then offer to help complete this task online. After this their bank account is hacked and then money is withdrawn from their bank.
How is cheating done?
- You get a call that your wallet or bank KYC is invalid.
- Caller says it can be verified online so that your account can be activated again.
- You are asked to download an app for convenience.
- When you use the app, the caller sees your phone screen.
- He asks you to transfer a small token amount to the wallet.
- When you do this, it sees the password and other details.
- He uses these same details together to withdraw large sums of money from your bank account.
- For all transfer requests, the customer receives OTPs, but the fraudsters intercept them through the app.
- Within minutes, the thugs wipe out the entire bank account.

How to Avoid E-KYC Scam?
In view of the increasing scams, Jio has also shared some tips that users should keep in mind to stay safe from such scams. Reliance Jio has given some tips along with warnings to its customers to avoid e-KYC scam. The company also keeps sending message alerts to protect users from these scams. Let’s know about those tips.
1. Do not respond to calls/messages for e-KYC verification
Jio has warned its customers not to respond to fake messages asking them to call any number for verification. Jio has cautioned users against answering calls and messages requesting e-KYC verification. If you ever get such call then block that number immediately.
2. Do not give your Aadhar Number, OTP or Bank Account Number
Do not give your Aadhaar number, OTP or bank account number to anyone claiming to be a Jio representative. Users should never share their OTP, Aadhaar or bank account information with anyone. The company says that Jio representatives never ask for such information.
3. Don’t believe what callers say
If you receive any call/SMS asking you to complete e-KYC otherwise your mobile services will be disconnected, do not respond/believe such claims that they are not true.
The operator warns users not to trust callers who claim that their connection will be suspended soon. All the details related to active connection can be accessed from MyJio app.
4. At any time click on the link given in SMS to renew
Jio has cautioned its customers not to click on links, attachments sent by fraudsters pretending to be Jio representatives. Jio has advised them against responding to such unsolicited communications.
Users should never click on an unverified link shared through a message from an alleged Jio representative. Jio advises users not to reply to such unwanted messages.
5. Avoid Downloading Third Party Apps
Reliance Jio says that it never asks users to download any third party applications. The official Jio app aka MyJio app provides all kinds of services related to mobile recharge. Never download any app in your phone for KYC update or any other kind of verification.
Jio customers should not download any app to update their KYC/Aadhaar details as the company never asks its customers to download any third party app for such activities. Customers should beware of such messages and calls. This type of message or call usually results in financial loss to the customers.
6. Do not call back on the number received in SMS
The operator also warns users to never provide call back numbers in SMS for completing e-KYC. It said that “usually a call back number is also mentioned for sharing the details. When the customer calls the given number, he is asked to install a third-party app that allows fraudsters to gain remote access to the bank accounts linked to the customer’s phone and device.
7. Report to your operator
If you get repeated messages or calls from this number, then report it to your operator and help to block that number so that it cannot do fraud with anyone else.
At the end,
“Please beware of such SMS/calls as it may lead to financial loss. Do not download remote access app, as fraudsters will get all the information on your phone,” the letter said.
